The School for Scoundrels Wiki Site

If you have not registered and logged in, you will not be able to edit any of the pages in this Scoundrels Wiki Site. If you have not logged in, please click on the Change settings/Logout link at the upper right of this screen. There you can log in or register with your "wiki name."

You must choose a wiki name for your username on this site. That is a word made of two capitalized words like JamesJoyce placed together without a space. Examples: RedButtons, FrankBoots, ShineyNose, JackSmith, DanglingParticiple, JohnJeffries, etc., etc.

This is the site where those who are interested in the history and language and methods of the street con artist combine our knowledge and research, and add to the body of knowledge about the short con. Created for our students at School for Scoundrels, this site is open to all who share our interest in this fascinating subject.

School for Scoundrels has several different history projects on this site, and these are called wiki "Pages." These are the main Scoundrels Pages:

ScoundrelsBibliography, ScoundrelsGallery, ScoundrelsGlossary, ScoundrelsSightings, ScoundrelsPatter, ScoundrelsFilm and ScoundrelsSayings.

Clicking on any of the above pages will take you to that page. You can correct, add to, enlarge, re-organize, rewrite, etc., any of these pages. You can add links to pages you create that expand on a history, etymology, etc., or give a place for others to place reviews of a book for example or to append any related material of interest.

You can create your own pages by clicking here on SandBox. Sandbox, as well as all other pages, can also be accessed through the PageIndex, or through links provided on other appropriate pages--like a link from a film list to a film review. The rules, formatting tools, and other documentation are available in the "Useful pages" listed above. Samples from the Scoundrels Pages are available for practice at PracticePage Here you can experiment as much as you want before entering the real pages.

Over time, as they grow, these pages will become a huge and valuable resource that will be available to all on Three-Card Monte, the Shell Game, Fast and Loose and other similar scams. Like a communal ball of string, every little addition just adds to the weight, the value, and the interest in these pages.

The best way to begin to understand the process and the possibilities of Wiki is to click on any of the pages above, for example, ScoundrelsBibliography. After reading over the page, you will begin to see where you can fix a spelling or gramatical error, or add some additional info.

It is easy to make a mistake when first editing pages. The most likely of these will be to lose or disarrange the formatting--the wrong things are bold, for example. It is also possible to lose a whole section of the page or erase the page. This is not a problem. Don't be timid. Every change is backed up and we can always return to a previous state.

If you make some mistake with the formatting and can't figure out how to fix it, don't worry. Just leave it. Someone else will come along after you and set it right. The information is the important thing. The formatting will be taken care of by the staff, if not by our other members. So publish what you can, and don't worry about making mistakes or doing damage. Others will fix your spelling errors or syntax or formatting. Don't worry if you don't have all the needed information--someone else will complete it. Don't worry that you may be incorrect in something you post--someone will correct it.

We are like bees building a honeycomb. Some bring the material, others put it into place, and so on.

This is not only an exciting medium, but an extremely resilient medium.

You can do no wrong.

Have fun!

Many people from all over the world will be adding to this hopefully rich "Stone Soup".

Eventually, we will have a public domain depository of information on the short con for researchers in the field.

If you come up with an idea for a new Scoundrels Page, pm Whit Haydn at the Scoundrels Forum.

He will implement the page if possible.
